When will Ken Salazar be given the "don't let the door knob hitcha'" treatment?

Ah, wake up call!!! That is what the worst environmental catastrophe will do to you!!! And we have a horrible piece by Rolling Stone towards the Obama Administration and their practically business as usual attitude.... But before we go ballistic on Rolling Stone for writing such an article, remember they were our FRIENDS... This Week With Barack Obama and Daily Kos

Bye Bye Plastic Bags
by citisven
I don't know if this has received much attention, but seeing that plastic bags are made from petrochemicals, I thought this is actually a quite timely bit of news: The California Assembly voted 41 to 27 to ban single-use plastic grocery bags, and the bill is expected to pass the senate and get signed by Gov. Schwarzenegger. Should it pass, you'll have to bring reusable bags to the store or pay at least 5 cents apiece for recycled paper bags when getting your goods bagged. Sorry, I won't shed a tear, and neither will the Pacific Ocean and its many glorious residents:

EcoAdvocates: Fossil Fuel "Bombing" of Wildlife & Oceans
by Patriot Daily News Clearinghouse
Americans are horrified about the wildlife harmed by the BP Gulf disaster: Official count yesterday was 1,300 dead or injured. Watching the oil-saturated birds suffering in videos physically turned my stomach. We know from Exxon Valdez that recovery rates are a small percent of the actual number of injured and dead wildlife, and this BP disaster is far from over. But, what about the harm from oceans filled with plastic bottles that are petroleum products? The swirling garbage gyres in the ocean look like a bomb exploded with varying sizes of plastic "shrapnel" that will kill wildlife. Each year globally plastic "kills more than 1 million sea birds and 100,000" whales, dolphins and seals. This is one issue where we can save lives by changing consumption patterns even if the government and corporations won't take action.

Boston Area Kossacks: Come to Saturday's Climate Concert!
by WarrenS
This is an update of a previously posted diary. On October 24, 2009, I put on a benefit concert for 350.org in my philosophical hometown, the People's Republic of Cambridge. It was a big success, raising a tad over $1500, and I swore I'd do it again. So I'm doing it again. Follow me below the flip to find out about an upcoming event featuring three great traditions of song — with all proceeds going to benefit www.350.org. This new, improved diary version now includes music videos of each performer, so you can whet your appetite! If you live in Massachusetts (oh, hell, I'll be optimistic and say "If you live in New England") you should try and make it down. And if you can't, let your friends who do live in Massachusetts know. Let's fill the hall!

Northeast Gulf Coast: A Photodiary (warning - lots of photos)
by matching mole
This is something I've been meaning to do for a month but somehow I've never been able to quite do it - the danger is too immediate. I first visited this area just over three years ago and have lived in Tallahassee for almost two years now. In that time I've fallen in love with the local coast. It's the first time in my life I've ever lived close to the ocean and it is amazing. And now, so terribly at risk Now I'm inspired by outstanding diaries authored by Kristina40 and gulfgal98. So here is my humble offering. I am leaving the country for two weeks tomorrow and who knows what this will look like when I get back.

This week in climate change: Wise-cracker Graham
by LaughingPlanet
Welcome to edition #9 of This week in climate change. Another week, another set of worsening conditions for the global environment and its warming climate. If ever there was a time to focus our collective attention on this pet issue, it is now. Has anyone pointed out that time's a wastin'? Just asking... • • • • • • Climate news, Climate Diary Rescue, Climate Blog Roundup, Action Items and more below the fold.

Why the Vote on Murky Air Act Matters. Call Today. Please.
by RLMiller
Tomorrow, the Senate will vote on S.J. Resolution 26, colloquially known as the Murky Air Act. Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-Baked Alaska) has introduced a resolution of disapproval of the EPA's ability to regulate greenhouse gases. If it passes, the EPA will forever be barred from taking action against carbon pollution. Forever. Why should you pick up the phone today, when President Obama has already threatened to veto (1 pg pdf) the resolution if it passes? Below the fold are answers and Senators most deserving of your phone calls.

ACTION: OFA urges supporters to fight Murkowski Resolution
by Eclectablog
As TomP noted yesterday, the White House is fighting the so-called Murkowski Resolution that would ban the Environmental Protection Agency from regulating greenhouse gases. EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson wrote a piece for the Huffington Post about this topic a couple of days ago. Today, Organizing for America (OFA) is getting in on the act. The full email from OFA after the fold.

OFA: Urgent action needed on clean energy
by Cedwyn
I get emails; you probably have the same one. Organizing for America is urging action against Lisa Murkowski's amendment to prevent the Environmental Protection Agency from regulating greenhouse gas pollution. If her measure becomes law, the effects would be immediate. Nearly every step President Obama has taken to promote clean energy would be repealed. It would wreak havoc on the President's landmark clean vehicle standards that ensure cars go farther on a gallon of gas, and it would block requirements that force large power plants and factories to use new technology and clean energy to reduce their pollution. This resolution is a giant step backward. Will you write your Senators?

Oilpocalypse and the Importance of the Apalachee Bay
by gulfgal98
The oil from the Deepwater Horizon oilpocalypse has already reached the most westerly part of Florida's panhandle in the Pensacola area, and is now threatening the entire northern Gulf Coast of Florida. Most people are familiar with the beautiful beaches of much of the Gulf coast of Florida, in particular, the stunning Emerald Coast along the north Florida Gulf Coast from Panama City Beach west. The Emerald Coast is a popular vacation haven. Kristina40's beautiful diary captures the incredible visual wonder of the Emerald Coast. This diary is about how this oil threatens another very important area of the north Florida Gulf coast, Florida's Forgotten Coast, and in particular, the Apalachee Bay. (Excellent picture in the Forgotten Coast link)

Inexorable melting of Arctic continues
by shpilk
June 8, 2010 Arctic sea ice extent declines rapidly in May In May, Arctic air temperatures remained above average, and sea ice extent declined at a rapid pace. At the end of the month, extent fell near the level recorded in 2006, the lowest in the satellite record for the end of May. Analysis from scientists at the University of Washington suggests that ice volume has continued to decline compared to recent years. However, it is too soon to say whether Arctic ice extent will reach another record low this summer—that will depend on the weather and wind conditions over the next few months. map from space showing sea ice extent, continentsFigure 1. Arctic sea ice extent for May 2010 was 13.10 million square kilometers (5.06 million square miles). The magenta line shows the 1979 to 2000 median extent for that month. The black cross indicates the geographic North Pole. Sea Ice Index data. About the data. —Credit: National Snow and Ice Data Center

Fishgrease: For Rachel

Rachel Maddow, Queen of Boom! Defender of Good Booming who doth Slayeth The Bad Boom and Reclaimest The Golden Boom Anchor! Boom Goddess! Most of you DKos Boomers have been following Rachel Maddow's discussions of the complete lack of Oil Industry investment in leak and spill cleanup research. This, while their exploration and research budgets supported drilling to ever more dangerous depths. She has also been the only MSM journalist to expose the way current technologies have been implemented... wrong. Rachel Maddow said, "That is bad boom right there!" and "Why is that boom so bad?". She did this while the rest of our News Media used useless boom installations as backdrop, never seeming to notice that a single thing was amiss. Jump the berm with me and I'll discuss good boom, bad boom, and as an added feature, Proper Boom Tending and how devastatingly attractive it is!
