Good evening. It is time for another one of these photo diaries provided only as a brief respite from the struggles of the day and as a brief reminder that we share this planet with all manner of amazing critters. I hope you enjoy your visit here.

Sea Star Shrimp Periclimenes soror on a Cushion Star Culcita novaguineae
When you turn over these echinoderms you often find these tiny crustaceans. Their color varies to match their host.

An equinox occurs twice a year, when the tilt of the Earth's axis is inclined neither away from nor towards the Sun, the Sun being vertically above a point on the Equator. The term equinox can also be used in a broader sense, meaning the date when such a passage happens. The name "equinox" is derived from the Latin aequus (equal) and nox (night), because around the equinox, the night and day are approximately equally long. It may be better understood to mean that latitudes +L and -L north and south of the equator experience nights of equal length.
In 2010, the autumnal equinox arrives on September 22 at 14:09 UTC which is 11:09 PM EDT or a few short hours from now.
And what does all this geeky stuff mean?....
This is another in a series of photo diaries intended as a brief respite from the struggles of the day and as a reminder that we share this planet with an amazing variety of critters. I hope you enjoy your visit here.
Spotted Eagle Ray
This is a case of trying to salvage a low-contrast technically flawed photo using some software tools to give a different look. Maybe not entirely successful but better than the original.
This is another photo diary meant to provide a brief respite from the stuggles of the day and as a reminder that we share this planet with all matter of amazing critters. These photos were taken this past weekend, including sunrise at Lanai Lookout at the eastern end of Oahu and during four dives on the west side of the island. I hope you enjoy your visit here.
Another one of these diaries meant to provide a brief respite from.. well you know. These photos were taken in the Okavango and Linyanti regions of northwest Botswana.
This is another in a series of diaries meant only as a brief respite from the stuggles and infuriations of the day and as a reminder that we share this planet with all manner of amazing critters. These photos were taken during a handfull of dives over the past two weekends including a night dive last night at Pupukea Marine Reserve. I hope you enjoy your visit.
This is another one of these diaries. You probably know the drill by now. No meta or conflict, just some photos of wildlife and some beautiful things. I have to say that I am in a serious post vacation funk abetted by tons of ugly news and a country that seems to have gone utterly insane. I doubt I am alone in my anger and disgust. I hope this helps in some small way.
This is another photo diary of images that I was fortunate enough to capture during a recent trip to the Okavango and Linyanti wilderness of northwest Botswana.
I recently returned from a photo safari to the Okavango and Linyanti wilderness of northwest Botswana. These photos are a result of that amazing trip. I offer this diary as a brief respite from the struggles of the day and a reminder that, holy sh*t, it's a leopard! There is still some wilderness left on earth. Not much and it is threatened, but there is a little. A big chunk of it is in Botswana.
Burchell's zebra (Equus burchellii)
I recently returned from my second once-in-a-lifetime trip to the Okavango and Linyanti wilderness of northwest Botswana. This dairy includes the some of the photographic results of that trip. I offer it as a brief respite from the insanity of the day, whatever that may mean to you, and as a reminder that we share this planet with some amazing creatures.
Aloha! I am back in the islands after my second once-in-a-lifetime trip to the Okavango and Linyanti wilderness of northwest Botswana. I have to say that re-entry into my work life and also into the blazing insanity that is American politics after two weeks of wildlife photography is jarring to say the least. This diary as all my diaries here is meant primarily as a respite from the craziness and as a reminder that we share this fragile planet with some incredible creatures.
For my first Botswana diary I am sticking primarily to some of the beautiful birds of the Okavango Delta.
Aloha! This is another in a series of diaries meant to provide a brief respite from the struggles of the day and you remind you landlubbers out there that we share this planet with some amazing creatures. I really hope you enjoy your visit here this evening.
Aloha. This diary is a departure from my usual critter heavy fare. These are some random photos taken (mostly) in my neighborhood on the windward side of Oahu. I am excited that the Flame Trees out in front of the condo are blooming. These shots were taken over the past week.
There is some experimentation in the processing in a few of these shots. If you are a film purist who hates HDR and other highly processed photos I feel your pain but will probably add to it with these. I am just playing around to see what works and what doesn't.
I hope everyone had a great Fourth!
Aloha and welcome to another one of these (mostly) underwater photo diaries. This diary is meant as a brief respite from the struggles of the day and as a reminder that we share this damaged planet with some amazing and beautiful creatures.
I will structure this diary roughly from the simplest to the most complex creatures that I photographed over the weekend. Of course we have all be evolving exactly the same length of time so let's have some humility.
Tiger or Divided Flatworm
We will pass over the cnidarians (jellys, hydroids and corals) that often appear as supporting characters and start with a flatworm. This brightly colored critter contains tetrodotoxin, the same poison found in pufferfish. Don't eat it.
This is another one of these things wherein I show you some critters that I have photographed under the waves off the island of Oahu. It is meant to remind you that we share this planet with some amazing creatures, even some that are not covered in oil and dying. It has been a while since I have posted because I am been buried at work this week. I hope you enjoy this little respite from the stuggles of the day.
If you don't read the rest of this diary, please take away these two requests:
Also, check out the 'Singing for the Planet' concert report by WarrenS, and rec the mothership!
I don't normally ask for much, but today I want a small piece of the meta pie. You know, the good kind, without the falme wars.eKos has received a lot of support from the eco-community, and for that we are thankful, but we'd like to spread the word far and wide. I'm hoping that this shameless bid for the rec-list will do the trick.
