According to ABC, both BP and the Coast Guard had video of the leaks in the Gulf of Mexico from early on, and these were not released to the public. BP and Feds Withheld Videos Showing Massive Scope of Oil Spill New videos show more clearly than ever how BP, with little resistance from the Coast Guard or other federal agencies, kept the public in the dark about just how bad things were beneath the surface of the Gulf of Mexico. This is pretty damning evidence of the power of corporate control over how the media is manipulated. The claim by the Coast Guard suppressing the information at BP instruction should be considered in the context that at the time BP are the ones in control of their well and all monitoring equipment. The Coast Guard's response had to be trust first and BP were telling them that they had plans to fix and stop the leak, thus a pragmatic approach was a co-operative approach. However the suppression story is only one part of this. What I want to know is what about that third leak?

Railroad ReModelers Club: Introduction
by Stranded Wind
The disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, a direct result of our oil addiction coupled with the drive-by drilling practices of pusher British Petroleum and their criminally negligent associates, has been consuming the attention of DailyKos. The wreck list lingers over a blow by blow of the oil gusher, but as horrific as it is this is just a symptom, a symptom of our oil addition, our media's mishandling of important issues, and the inability of the stateless, egalitarian blogosphere to self organize and deal with pushing policy changes. I've been talking about the need for change in our methods for a couple of years. I've been working on just that since we founded the Blog Workers Industrial Union. We've worked on political races and issues advocacy before, but this is the first campaign we've developed from scratch. I'm very curious to hear your opinions on both the solution and the methods.

The Sword's Edge: Obama And Big Oil

Almost 2 years ago Juhasz talked with The Real News Network about the oil industry in America and around the world, and after the recent and ongoing poisoning of the Gulf of Mexico caused a least I think in part by the regulatory corruption of MMS and the US government by BP and the other oil companies, maybe it's time to revisit the predictions made in the interview so long ago.

UPDATED: Some of the Oil is being Captured, and SOME, of it is NOT
by jamess
You've got to love breathless headlines, full of the 'best spin' possible. BP manages to catch some leaking crude oil Canwest News Service - June 4, 2010 It's estimated BP is siphoning oil at a rate of about 1,000 barrels a day so far. The damaged well has been spewing between 12,000 and 25,000 barrels a day since April. Allen said the containment cap had not made a perfect seal over the riser pipe, so oil may still be able to escape even after the vents are closed. 1,000 / 12,000 = 8.3% 1,000 / 25,000 = 4.2% But what does SOME really mean if we choose to use the Worst Case scenario numbers, that BP gave Congress, behind closed doors? It seems we are approaching that 'Worst Case' ... 1,000 / 60,000 = 1.7% Yes, I guess, that might qualify as "some" of the Oil being captured. Of course that should be immediately follow by the question: Well that means "SOME" of it is still gushing, Right? How Much ... are in each of those 'some's?

OSHA Says Workers Don't Need Protection In Gulf Spill
by slinkerwink
This is infuriating to read, given the news reports about workers feeling ill in the clean-up of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. There are more stories like these coming out about workers getting ill, and about BP not providing them protective wear and respirators. Apparently OSHA says that these workers don't need respirators in the clean-up of the oil spill: David Michaels, assistant secretary for the Department of Labor's OSHA, said in an interview Thursday that based on test results so far, cleanup workers are receiving "minimal" exposure to airborne toxins. OSHA will require that BP provide certain protective clothing, but not respirators. For more on this developing situation, please read what environmental advocates such as Albert Huang and others have to say about the need for workers to have protection from respiratory problems in dealing with potentially dangerous inhalants.

Capping the Gaffe Gusher: Silencing Tony Hayward
by LaFeminista
In a desperate final bid engineers are setting up in the BP boardroom millions of pounds worth of anti-noise equipment, and a suspiciously large glass dome. The budget for this last ditch effort is not being released, however shares in BP fell sharply in afternoon trading. Dr Janet Sharpman said "It's and extremely delicate operation lowering the dome over Tony, we estimate the probability of him remaining in one place long enough to be in the order of 20%". Dr Fred Peters added "Shutting up Tony is now our number one priority, we have the keys to the Rolls Royce and the chauffeur has been given extended paid leave. We believe this has improved the probability for sucess twofold." Byron Grote CFO "We have given our engineers an unprecedented budget to resolve the verbal utterances of our rogue CEO, quite frankly every time he opens his mouth, I reach for the Valium and whiskey. This must stop now."
