24 Hours Away from Earl

by FishOutofWater

Topsail beach, NC 11am Loudspeakers from a beach patrol truck blaring the warning "Hurricane Earl has generated strong waves and rip currents..." greeted me as I walked towards the water fins in hand. Long lines, the sign of a long period swell produced by a large distant storm, marched towards the beach like marines in parade.

Tomorrow the battle will begin.

America’s Choice: Leave a Legacy of Hell or Bequeath Clean Air

by Leo W Gerard

These days, good-paying industrial jobs need not exact untimely deaths from pollution.  In fact, development of clean renewable energy generators – the likes of wind turbines, solar cells, biomass – would create and support good industrial jobs in America. Blue collar union workers and green collar environmentalists are pressing lawmakers to pass comprehensive climate change legislation. The BlueGreens told audiences in August the choice for lawmakers is leaving a legacy of environmental hell or bequeathing climate unchanged.

When I see a 9/11 victim family on television, or whatever, I'm just like, "Oh shut up" I'm so sick of them because they're always complaining. -- Glenn Beck

Man is man because he is free to operate within the framework of his destiny.  He is free to deliberate, to make decisions, and to choose between alternatives.  He is distinguished from animals by his freedom to do evil or to do good and to walk the high road of beauty or tread the low road of ugly degeneracy. -- Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.

AK-SEN: Thinking past Lisa ... to Scott

by A Siegel

Global Warming concern troll Senator Lisa Murkowski has fallen in the Republican primary to a anti-science syndrome suffering hater of a livable economic system, who despises government, and represents fringe extreme views that simply don't meet basic American ideals or the understanding/beliefs of most Americans.  If Murkowski had prevailed in the primary, she almost certainly would have won in the general election.

And, now ... ????

Staying Tuned for More Innovations

by NourishingthePlanet

Crossposted from the Worldwatch Institute's Nourishing the Planet

Listen to Radio Fanaka Fana and Radio Jigiya, in the Fana and Zégoua regions of Mali, and you are much more likely to hear tips for improving compost piles and soil quality than you are pop music hits or current events. That’s because the station is participating in Farm Radio International’s Africa Farm Radio Research Initiative (AFRRI), a project to test the viability of using radio as a tool for spreading agricultural information to farmers throughout Africa.

Nobody Knows

by matching mole

I can't believe I am doing this.  Writing a diary that mirrors the title of one currently on the rec list (just left the rec list I guess).  But I feel compelled to write a bit on this topic as I have frequently been frustrated by the response of many here to the BP oil disaster.  And the reversal of the title was too good to resist (and I should add that I have nothing but respect for the diarist in question).  The responses tI refer to are understandable in view of the magnitude of the issue, the general political situation, and the lack of a coherent and open response from those in charge.  But they are also somewhat self-defeating.  I'll explain.

Bioaccumulation: the gift that keeps on giving

by mwmwm

Bioaccumulation.

It's what's for dinner.

And lunch, and breakfast. Its danger depends a bit on whether you're flora or fauna, insect or mammal, baby or oldster -- and, of course, what you've accumulated.

But it's dangerous, and on the rise.

Village Green: to Aid NOLA Recovery, Lose the Treme Expressway

by Kaid at NRDC

As we reflect on the five years that have passed since Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, we can observe both progress and much, much left to be done.  At Xavier University Sunday, President Obama spoke for many when he said that despite progress there are still too many vacant lots, too many people unemployed and "too many New Orleanians who have not been able to come home."  Writing for the Associated Press, Cain Burdeau and Michael Kunzelman also report that the President noted the harsh reality that the recession and the Gulf oil spill have only compounded the challenges of recovery.

Rebuilding one of our nation’s most loved (if also most impoverished) cities has been inherently a matter of planning and architecture, and the task has brought out many ideas, some fabulous, others well-intentioned but falling short of the mark, in my humble opinion.

Everybody Knows

by Crashing Vor

Everybody knows the boat is leaking.
Everybody knows that the captain lied.

A few people have asked me recently why I've stopped writing about The Hell, why issues other than the petro pus from the Macondo well have crept into my posts of late.

I figure it's mostly because I'm dumb. There are people way smarter than I who can tell you whatever you need to know about all that, and the consensus from the smarter people is clear: It's over. Move on.
