The incredibly Thinning Arctic Ice Cap -- simply Chilling!

by jamess

I had one of those conversations with a co-worker today.

about Climate Change.

The "Earth Cycles" rhetoric is gearing up for 2 years of give-aways, it seems.

My co-worker, despite having several science degrees, including one in physics and one in meteorology, is still under the belief that Climate Change is just a matter of Natural Cycles.  Mankind has nothing to do with it.

Well I struck upon an idea, that I thought might appeal to his "inner scientist" --

The Idea of Inertia.

The "Inertia" of the Ice Thickness, specifically.  The "heat reservoirs" in the ocean warm top layers;  the "cold reservoirs" in the various Ice Caps, around the world, too.

And the Fact that the Arctic Ice Cap has been rapidly thinning for a while now -- got his attention.  He was unaware of this Fact.

And the associated permafrost melting, with its expected Methane release got his attention too.  He was unaware of that Methane was a potent Greenhouse Gas, nor about the frozen Methane Hydrates on the Ocean floors, either.

The "inner scientist" seemed to be listening ...

The Night Train: The Path for Ohio High Speed Rail

by BruceMcF

Burning the Midnight Oil for Living Energy Independence

One of the consequences of the 2010 General Elections was the election of RepubliCorp Governors in Ohio and Wisconsin who politically neutralized the success of sitting Democratic state administrations in landing $400m and $800m High Speed Rail funding by demonizing the High Speed projects that were funded.

What that means for Wisconsin seems likely to be cancellation of the project but its certainly worth pushing back (and see below for further).

Ohio was completing the final Design this year, so never committed to the Build funds, so while Kasich is handing ~8,000 jobs to another state, there's no immediate budget impact to hit him with. Indeed, given the new make-up of the state board that would have to approve taking the Build money, after demonizing the "Quickstart", Kasich couldn't take the money now if he wanted to.

So where next for Ohio High Speed Rail?

Obama Admin: Rail Money is for Rail, Use it or lose it

by greendem

The Obama administration is urging Wisconsin's incoming Republican governor, Scott Walker, to reconsider his opposition to high-speed rail in his state and threatened to rescind $810 million in federal stimulus grants for the project if the venture is killed.

For the Record, Walker sought to prove his teabagger cred when he picked this fight.

"I am drawing a line in the sand Mr. President:  No matter how much money you and Governor Doyle try to spend before the end of the year, I will put a stop to this boondoggle the day I take office."

Village Green: Cities matter, but regions and neighborhoods may matter more

by Kaid at NRDC

I’m going to start by being deliberatively provocative:  "cities" may not matter nearly as much as we sometimes suggest.  I surround the word with quotation marks, because I am talking about cities as municipalities with legal boundaries – which is not, by the way, how most people use the word.  And that’s where we can get into trouble when it comes to policy.

RIP, "Clean" Coal

by TheGreenMiles

Rest in peace, "clean" coal. Such a tragic death -- killed by the people who claimed to love it. With "clean" coal's best interests at heart, they blocked the only thing that could've kept it alive: A comprehensive climate & energy bill.
