The Water Lords: Who Owns Your Water?

by Patric Juillet

One of the most important trends (and least understood) in the water industry in the last two decades has been the selling out contracting of private companies to operate existing facilities or build and operate new facilities. I don't have to remind you that the fate of the world rests principally on mitigating climate change and on its water policies as Daniel Zimmer (executive director of the World Water Council) explains:

Water is a political issue, but politicians need to understand why they should care more about water.

Yes, one would think so but unfortunately the commoditization of water is rife, aided and abated by the IMF and the World Bank, never mind that it is unethical and environmentally unsound. Like a case of déjà vu, we are rapidly losing control of our most vital resource to a handful of monopolistic corporations.

Corporations don’t care about the environment, and they certainly don’t care about human rights. They only care about profit.

BP has a Jobs Plan -- They want to Buy the Scientists

by jamess

BP buys up Gulf scientists for legal defense, roiling academic community
Ben Raines, Press-Register -- July 16, 2010

More than one scientist interviewed by the Press-Register described being offered $250 an hour through BP lawyers. At eight hours a week, that amounts to $104,000 a year.
[...]
The contract makes it clear that BP is seeking to add scientists to the legal team that will fight the Natural Resources Damage Assessment lawsuit that the federal government will bring as a result of the Gulf oil spill.

Is it their Scientific Expertise, that they want --

Or their Scientific Silence?

New Orleans, canary in a coal mine

by James Paton Walsh

The oil disaster is destroying what remains of the wetlands that provide us with minimal protection from hurricanes.  The levees that were built and maintained by the Corps of Engineers failed in Katrina and barely withstood Gustav.  Storms are getting larger because of global warming.  The government is in bed with the oil companies and the banks.

The Next Dem. Primary Senate Candidate You Should Know About (DK Greenroots)

by wade norris

Now that we have delivered victories for Joe Sestak in Pennsylvania and most likely a win for Bill Halter in Arkansas, you, the Netroots, need to know about the next important Primary Candidate. Just like the race between Lincoln and Halter, this is a choice between a Corporate powered candidate vs a People powered candidate. Andrew Romanoff has taken the same pledge that Barack Obama took to win his race - he has pledged to take no corporate PAC Contributions or Special Interest money.  If you knew nothing else, that would be a good reason to support Andrew Romanoff. However, you need to know why his opponent does not deserve to be re-elected. Michael Bennet is a Bankster Senator and was a corporate raider  before he was appointed a Senator.   There is a clear difference in this race - supporting the Candidate who works for Wall Street or supporting Andrew Romanoff, the Candidate who works for us on Main Street.
