1 Billion Hungry Mobilizes (Q&A)

by NourishingthePlanet

Q&A with Sharon Lee Cowan, Project Manager of “The 1 Billion Hungry Project”, a worldwide petition project launched by the FAO and partner organizations dedicated to pushing chronic hunger as a priority on national and international political agendas.

What is the goal number of signatures?
Our initial goal was to collect one million signatures on the petition to end hunger, and to present these results to national leaders in late October.  We felt that a million was significant to get people’s attention, to be an indicator that there IS popular demand for an end to hunger and also achievable in a short period of time between mid-May and late October. For logistical reasons the date for presentation to governments was later shifted to 29 November, so we will likely end up overshooting the original goal.  We are already at well over 900,000 signatures.

EnergizeUS: Restoring American Manufacturing

by Energize US

There will be no recovery without jobs. It's just that simple. We've watched for thirty long years as the manufacturing jobs that made America strong were spirited away to countries with lax environmental regulations and little or no protection for their citizens. American workers were forced to compete with three hundred million underemployed Chinese who were willing to work for $132 a month.

We have to buy it here. We have to make it here. And unless those doing the making are themselves making it our downward spiral will continue.

We can make this change and local energy production is the first step we should take.

BOE Chief Thinks Drilling Moratorium Can End Early

by Something the Dog Said

The new Director of Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement (OEMRE) (sheesh!) Michael Bromwich said yesterday that the Obama Administration is looking at the possibility of ending the deep water drilling moratorium "significantly" earlier than the Nov. 30 expiration date. This is in response to the uproar from Gulf State lawmakers (most from the radicalized Republican Party) that it is killing jobs.

UCS hosts second of four webinars on climate change (with poll)

by hold tight

This morning, the Union of Concerned Scientists hosted another webinar from the National Academy of Sciences presenting the results of their work on climate change. This one addressed 'Limiting the Magnitude of Future Climate Change.'

I posted a diary last week about the first webinar. In it, I provided the background for the studies, and links to the reports that came out of the work.

Today, I will summarize the conclusions of this second report presented in the webinar. You can read a brief summary of it here.

But, first, a personal note.
