Underwater Hawai'i - A Photo Diary

by Haole in Hawaii

This is another of these diaries meant as a respite from the stuggles of the day and as a reminder that we share this planet with a huge variety of incredible creatures.  Remember we are all related.

These photos were taken during four dives this past weekend on the north shore of Oahu in Pupukea Marine Life Conservation District. I hope you enjoy your visit.

EcoJustice: The best of grassroots in the Congo.

by rb137

KuangSi2In December, one of the HEAL Africa counselors was dispatched from Goma to Lubutu, a seven hour drive, to advocate for a woman that needed legal help. The woman was a patient in a hospital where a nurse raped her. She was poor and powerless to prosecute him without HEAL Africa's help.

When the counselor intervened, the hospital administration fired the nurse, and he was sorely indignant at losing his job. He had been well paid, so his family lost their standard of living. Tribal leaders in the local villages saw this as a grave injustice, and began to make dire threats. They threatened to kill the counselor, and they promised to band together and sabotage HEAL Africa's operations throughout the region.

Denial to Determination ...

by A Siegel

Acceptance of and understanding of Global Warming is an overwhelming action. Truly understanding what we (all of the US and all of us) face commands decisions about how one will interact with the globe from that moment on. Now, for better or worse, there are many (often illegitimate) reasons for skepticism about Global Warming. One of these is, quite clearly, an emotional desire to avoid having to face those decisions in the face. But, there is a path toward that decision point. For quite good reasons, that path is very close to that outlined by Elizabeth Kubler-Rossin Death and Denying for dealing with life's tragedies.

  1. Denial,

  2. Skepticism (anger for dealing with grief)

  3. Delay (bargaining)

  4. Depression

  5. Determination and Activism (acceptance)

The industrial agricultural system, now the predominant form of agriculture in the USA and increasingly world-wide, has consequences for public health owing to its extensive use of fertilisers and pesticides, unsustainable use of resources and environmental pollution.

Science Tidbits

by possum

The time is here once again.  Time to gather around and take a well deserved hiatus from all the politics of the day.  Science talk is here.  New discoveries, new takes on old knowledge, and other bits of news are all available for the perusing in today's information world.  Over the fold are selections from the past week from a few of the many excellent science news sites around the world.  Today's tidbits include stretched polymer snaps back smaller than its start, evidence of feasting in early humans, climate change implicated in the decline of horseshoe crabs, famed Tasmanian devil euthanised after tumor (facial cancer) found, and self-assembling photovoltaic technology that repairs itself.  Pull up that beach chair and relax.  There is plenty of room for everyone.  Settle in for one more session of Dr. Possum's science education and entertainment.
