eKos: C02 Caused Climate Change Will Be Irreversible

by FishOutofWater

Climate change caused by anthropogenic CO2 emissions persists for over a thousand years and even short lived gases such as methane have long-term effects once they warm the deep ocean.

Carbon dioxide displays exceptional persistence that renders its warming nearly irreversible for more than 1,000 years..(edit).. dampening factors that slow temperature increase during periods of increasing concentration also slow the loss of energy from the Earth’s climate system if radiative forcing is reduced.

California Technology – Help Jerry Brown

by Sara R

I first came to California in 1966 as a nine year old child.  My father was finishing his time in the Air Force at Vandenberg AFB before taking a job in the aerospace industry in Southern California.

Southern California was aerospace central in those days.  We were going to the moon, discovering how to walk in space, and developing new passenger aircraft, to boot.  In the wake of all this, many new products were developed.  It was a boom time, a time of good jobs.  I remember it fondly.

Village Green: Revitalization With Palm Trees

by Kaid at NRDC

  Northwood Village (courtesy of Mary Jo Aagerstoun)

The trendiest neighborhood in West Palm Beach is Northwood, a collection of historic districts, fading industrial areas, and blocks of small bungalows and grand Mission-style homes that is now hopping with cafes, boutiques, a monthly art and wine "promenade," new workforce housing, significant streetscape improvements, a new Maritime Institute, and a can-do attitude.  Yet not that long ago it was a worn-down area with declining property values (pre-recession), empty storefronts, "slum landlords" and a dicey reputation.  One local business owner lamented to Palm Beach Post reporter Rhonda Swann in 2008 that "Northwood Village [the commercial district] has been up and coming for 25 years, and that's sad."

Coping with Coal Ash's Health Effects

by Bruce Nilles

This is the latest in our series of community coal ash profiles. This piece was written by Sierra Club Apprentice Lydia Avila.

The community of Joliet, Illinois, identifies as many things - Midwestern, humble, and hard-working. Yet they also identify with something much less positive: being collateral damage. According to Joliet residents, they don't even merit a second thought to Midwest Generation, a coal-fired power plant that has been dumping toxic coal ash near Joliet for over 40 years.

Stupid Goes Viral: Climate Zombies of AR, IL, MI, NE, ND

by RLMiller

securedownload[1]

They prowl the halls of Congress, moaning for caaasshh.

Their stupid has gone viral.

And if they win, humanity loses.

I'm tracking Climate Zombies: every Republican candidate for House, Senate, and Governor who doubts, denies, or derides the science of climate change. Today, I finish all states (except California, which I'm saving for last) wholly west of the Mississippi River by visiting Arkansas, Illinois, Michigan, Nebraska, and North Dakota.

Daily bigjac Poetry Slam

by bigjacbigjacbigjac

This is one of my favorite Bible passages, Ecclesiastes, Chapter 3:

verse 18:
I said in mine heart
concerning the estate
of the sons of men,
that God might manifest them,
and that they might see
that they themselves are beasts.
verse 19:
For that which befalleth
the sons of men
befalleth beasts;
even one thing befalleth them:
as the one dieth,
so dieth the other;
yea,
they all have one breath;
so that a man hath no preeminence
above a beast:
for all is vanity.
verse 20:
All go unto one place;
all are of the dust,
and all turn to dust
again.

So, did you realize that the Bible supports Darwin?

Here is a link, in case you want to read the whole chapter:

If we act well, the world can go on

by erratic

You don't actually need to read this diary. It's just a response to a diary by FishOutofWater a few weeks back: eKos: Astounding. Warning from our Elder Brothers. That's the one you should be reading:  . I haven't stopped thinking about it, and wanted to share it with those who missed it then. Here's the opening paragraph:

The elder brothers, the Kogi people, who retreated through dense Colombian jungle to high mountain sanctuaries from lost cities,  rather than be conquered by Europeans or converted by missionaries, have sent their first emissary ever to Europe to warn us that we are are killing the earth.

One remarkable thing about this story is that the Kogi people have successfully kept their connections to their traditions and history, have stood up for and won back rights to their lands, and, having recognized the impacts of climate change on their world, have reached out to the rest of us to share their concerns and insights. Go read that diary, mine's just a pale shadow.
