This One Really Stings

by Michael Brune

We called it, simply, The Test. I grew up on a house on Barnegat Bay in Chadwick Beach, New Jersey. With four little children scampering around, my parents had a hard and fast rule for us and our friends: No one was allowed to play in the front yard, on the docks or anywhere outside without wearing a life preserver. Whether we were playing baseball, digging up worms, or going crabbing, those big orange puffy preservers had to be on, and buckled, at all times.

We hated it. The only way to freedom was to pass a test by swimming all the way across the lagoon and back. It was a rite of passage. Those of us who were ready would talk about it for weeks. We'd practice and ask questions of our older siblings. I remember lying in bed the night before, wondering what I'd do if I got tired. Would I drown? Would I have to wait another month before trying again?

I live in the San Francisco Bay Area now, but I come home to Barnegat Bay every summer with my wife and our two kids. It's a highlight of our year. This summer our daughter Olivia was going to take her shot. She'd been practicing at the pool for weeks. My dad, unable to resist the urge to spoil his granddaughter, sweetened the pot with the promise of a bowl of ice cream at the end.

Rachel Maddow Did Some Great Reporting Re: Wetlands Last Night

by Muzikal203

. . . and if you missed it you should definitely check it out. I'd heard people saying how bad it will be for the oil to hit the wetlands, but no one really told WHY before. I mean outside of the obvious fact that it would be terribly difficult (damn near impossible) to clean. Last night Rachel explained what the wetlands were, what they do, and how the oil spill will harm the wetlands and ultimately the city of New Orleans and the rest of the country. I'm going to post the video below the jump.

Even worse: shallow oil pipelines in dying wetlands

by mwmwm

So I'm mesmerized in horror, watching the hypnotic gush of the live feed. I'm groaning over the ocean life that will die unnoticed in the deep, after ingesting toxic dispersants and more-toxic oil. I'm grieving for the oil-soaked wetlands, and all those to come, suffocated by the black coating of our collective addiction to cheap energy. And then: The National Geographic reports on a problem that I'd not considered: a feedback system that I fear will consume the life and livelihoods of the coast.

Gulf gusher: a sort of requiem

by mwmwm

The oil and gas rush out of the pipe: a force we believed we could master. The oil explodes into droplets, then reforms into gobs, then into droplets once again. The oil rushes, then relaxes, and begins to move lazily in the currents. The lightest oil rises to the surface, forming a sheen that glistens in the sun. The heavier oil rises, or falls, or is swirled like heavy cream. Deep down, the ocean layers move in patterns we cannot see, and do not know, intermixing, carrying the oil inward and outward, forward and back, now diffusing, now coalescing, the soft light of the sun barely reaching the layers on layers of temperature gradients.
