Whitman's One-Two Punch to Health And Environment

by Patriot Daily News Clearinghouse

Some friends shared their frustration with trying to make sense of the interrelationship of AB 32 (California's climate change law), Proposition 23 (a ballot measure to nix our climate change law), and Proposition 26 (a measure to transform regulatory fees into taxes).  Essentially, the Whitman game plan is to give the sham appearance that she cares about our health, environmental resources and climate change impacts. In reality, she wants to enable corporations to continue to sicken people and damage natural resources while removing a key tool for corporate accountability.

Meg Whitman opposes Proposition 23, the ballot measure to nix our climate change law, and might hope that people won't notice that she also opposes our climate change law. Meg apparently does not want the voters to nix AB 32 because she plans to unilaterally nix our climate law by issuing a moratorium order on her first day as governor. Whitman also supports Prop 26, which would remove a key tool of corporate accountability for external costs of pollution and could be used for climate change impacts.

Koch's Greed Could Kill CA Climate Change Law

by Steven D

It should come to no one's surprise that two of the wealthiest men in America, Charles and David Koch, who just happen to own Koch Industries, a holding company with major investments in the Oil and Gas Industry are attempting to defeat, for their own grubby little purposes landmark climate change legislation in California.  If they succeed it will be a major setback to (1) responsible action regarding the threat of climate change, (2) the development of green industries and jobs, (3) weaning ourselves from dependence on foreign sources of dirty fossil fuels and (4)environmental protection:

Prop 23 Reinforces Race and Class Discrimination

by Patriot Daily News Clearinghouse

California AB 32 is the Global Warming Solutions Act signed into law in 2006. AB 32 focuses on climate change and includes an environmental justice provision to address the killing and harming of poor and minority communities that is now the status quo. Prop 23 is a ballot measure to nix AB 32.  Some newspaper editorials oppose Prop 23, but the most recent July polls show a slim majority of no votes. One statewide poll showed 67% favor AB 32, but when the question is focused on Prop 23, support softens by at least 14, or a slim majority (53%) (pdf file).  A second statewide poll shows similar results on Prop 23:  yes vote (36%), no (48%) and undecided (16%).

As voters gear up for the election, we must continue work to defeat this anti-climate change and anti-civil rights measure.

Arnold Schwarzenegger: "Why would we want to go back to the Stone Age?"

by citisven

In response to California Republican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman calling for a one-year moratorium on AB 32, the landmark law which requires the state to cut emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases 25 percent by 2020, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, at a green jobs exhibit in March, had this to say:

Why would we want to go back to the Stone Age?

While it's good to know that there is still a leading Republican who hasn't gone into complete tea party meltdown, this exchange is important because after last week's death of the climate bill it points our attention to where the next big climate battle in this country is going to take place: KAH-lee-fo-nee-ah.

High Stakes for Climate and Clean Energy in California

by Lowell Feld NRDC Action Fund

As the full scope of the disaster in the Gulf of Mexico  continues to unfold, there's  another energy-related drama in California. This one threatens the Golden State's landmark law (AB 32)  to limit the greenhouse gas  pollution that is already harming California and to promote a host of related clean energy policies that would benefit the state. A proposition that is now certified for the November ballot, Proposition 23 --  known as the "Dirty Energy Proposition" -- would kill investments and job creation in the new energy economy already spurred by AB 32 since it was enacted in 2006. This is one of the most important environmental campaigns of 2010, with implications far beyond California.

California: Break the Oil Addiction Cycle

by Ella Arnold

For weeks on end we have watched our dependence on Big Oil cause the greatest environmental disaster this country has ever seen. We have been horrified by pictures like this. We have been saddened by the stories of all of the Gulf Coast residents who have lost their jobs and are now struggling to make ends meet. And we have been angered by the ineptitude of the BP executives who allowed this tragedy to happen and could not care less if the Gulf Coast ever recovers.

The attitude of corporate greed and environmental irresponsibility has once again reared its ugly head, this time in the state of California, where on Monday, a deceptive ballot initiative called the California Jobs Initiative qualified for the state's November ballot.

TX Oil Companies Try to Kill CA Clean Energy Legislation

by NRDCActionFund

As if the oil companies from Texas – and their allies in the corridors of power - hadn’t done enough harm to our country already (for more, see the late, great Gulf of Mexico), now they are at it once again.  This time, it’s Valero and Tesoro, pouring money into a campaign this election season to undo California’s landmark, clean energy and climate law, AB 32.  On Tuesday, the oil companies’ proposition was certified for the November ballot. The fight, as they say, is on!

Why should you care?  Let us count the ways.
