"Weak" Obama Admin: Wind, not Oil!

by Lawrence

The current, popular narrative here at DailyKos seems to be that President Obama is weak and "capitulates" to Republicans more often than any of us can say capitulate between breakfast and lunch.

First-Ever Solar Projects Approved for Federal Lands and Other Good Environmental News

by askew

As part of the Obama Administration's celebration of National Energy Awareness Month, there have been some great environmental news this week. First, the Obama administration announced they are putting U.S. built solar panels back on the White House, as well as a solar hot water heater on the roof of the White House Residence (see Lawrence's great diary on this subject).

BP and the Gov't: Setting Precedent, Reforming Image*

by scorpiorising

The Gulf of Mexico, her marine life and the people of the Gulf coast are a political sacrifice, and one that the Obama administration had no right to make.

The lies of BP and our government are as toxic as the oil that remains in the Gulf, and the dispersant that BP continues to be used in full view, and apparently with approval from, our government. There is a massive cover-up taking place on the Gulf coast, in full view of the "public", the people, in full view of the corporate media, in full view of the world.

We don't need ... don't want your help ...

by A Siegel

When it comes to the necessity of facing down pollution in the nation's electricity system and other major polluting industries, it is hard to read recent Obama Administration action as anything other than a strong statement to leading environmental organizations:
Stay out of our way.

We don't need your help.

We don't want your help.

With monumental inaction by the U.S. Senate in the face of devastating climate chaos from flooded Pakistan to smoldering Russian to heat records in many nations and many areas of the United States, the paths forward to effective action to turn the tide away from egregious CO2 emissions seem limited (at best).  With the President (and his Administration) having, to put it politely, flubbed its leadership role on the climate front in terms of getting serious and meaningful action through the U.S. Congress, we have to wonder seriously at the latest action.

BOE Chief Thinks Drilling Moratorium Can End Early

by Something the Dog Said

The new Director of Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement (OEMRE) (sheesh!) Michael Bromwich said yesterday that the Obama Administration is looking at the possibility of ending the deep water drilling moratorium "significantly" earlier than the Nov. 30 expiration date. This is in response to the uproar from Gulf State lawmakers (most from the radicalized Republican Party) that it is killing jobs.

Reconstituting the Standard Oil Company

by bobdevo

The Standard Oil Company was the largest and arguably the most powerful corporation in the history of mankind. In 1904, Standard controlled 91% of production and 85% of final sales of petroleum products in the USA. Because of its monopolistic powers and unlawful business practices, on May 15, 1911, the Supreme Court declared the Standard Oil group to be an unreasonable monopoly  under the Sherman Antitrust Act, and ordered Standard to break up into 34 independent companies.

Until White House Behavior Changes....

by icebergslim

it is just more of the same.

The stimulus package needed to be minimum ONE TRILLION DOLLARS.

We knew this, but now President Obama is asking, begging, trying to make the case that he needs 50 billion dollars to save teachers, firefighters, policemen jobs out here.  (all of the stimulus money has not been spent, but 50B they don't have....)

But, when you listen to Blue Dog Democrats, wanting Republican votes you get what we got in the stimulus package.  A compromised package that many economic experts said from the very beginning was not enough money.  And we won't even get into the stimulus package creating jobs, it did not, it saved the very jobs for a short time, that now the White House needs more money to save again.

Source: HUGE Federal Gulf Public Works Project Coming

by calchala

Apparently, according to historian, Douglas Brinkley there is a huge federal gulf recovery act being planned by the Obama administration and by Congress that would be on the scale of Tennessee Valley Authority.   This would include redirecting the Mississippi River down towards the gulf but wouldn't begin until after the well was fully capped and the relief well was drilled.  h/t RLMiller Tennessee Valley Authority for Gulf Coast

President Obama? A Kanye Moment?

by icebergslim

Remember THIS from a telethon in 2005 for victims of Hurricane Katrina.  Kanye West rattled on but the man was angry.  Mike Myers and his facial expressions will go down in infamy.

(Video) Reality and inconvenience for BP CEO Tony Hayward settling in

by icebergslim

First off, the BP Oil Disaster on the Deepwater Horizon is British Petroleum's fault at the end of the day.  Now BP can continue to point fingers at Transocean or Halliburton, but at the end of the day, it was BP who was drilling in deep ocean water for crude oil. Next, this is not Barack Obama's fault.  This was a man made disaster caused by greed, in my opinion.  Greed of a company to make more money, and greed of the money received to allowe BP to drill by the United States of America. Finally, the reality is that this oil will probably spill until the relief wells are on line, the earliest late July and the latest late August.  So, for another solid 60 days, we have the glorious opportunity to continue to view the toxic oil dumping into the Gulf Coast.AND

The MMS Division is doing things "Big Pimpin' Style"

by icebergslim

The President tells an aide:  PLUG THE DAMN HOLE.... My sentiments too, because this is becoming an embarrassment of the highest caliber and it falls under the Obama Watch. Yes, the Obama Watch.  Even though we KNOW that this despicable department had all kind of bullshit, and illegal bullshit attached to it while Bush Co. was in charge, the problem is that it never was FIXED.  And we are in year two of the Obama Watch.  Thus.... it falls under our watch.
