1 Billion Hungry Mobilizes (Q&A)

by NourishingthePlanet

Q&A with Sharon Lee Cowan, Project Manager of “The 1 Billion Hungry Project”, a worldwide petition project launched by the FAO and partner organizations dedicated to pushing chronic hunger as a priority on national and international political agendas.

What is the goal number of signatures?
Our initial goal was to collect one million signatures on the petition to end hunger, and to present these results to national leaders in late October.  We felt that a million was significant to get people’s attention, to be an indicator that there IS popular demand for an end to hunger and also achievable in a short period of time between mid-May and late October. For logistical reasons the date for presentation to governments was later shifted to 29 November, so we will likely end up overshooting the original goal.  We are already at well over 900,000 signatures.

Finally: Scientists to fight Climate Deniers

by bluicebank

As is their wont, scientists largely eschew the political world. They concern themselves with their jobs. They focus on data and analysis. This works well in most fields. There is no anti-particle physics movement. Conservatives have (yet) to mount an assault on mathematics.

The sciences involved with climatology are not so lucky. They have decided to strike out against those who are dedicated to destroying the credibility of this field.

NY to gain high-speed rail cash at OH, WI expense

by Daniel Case

Those of us in the Empire State are seeing the immediate benefit of electing a Democratic governor. I'm sorry for people in those states, but it is coming at the immediate expense of the states of Ohio and Wisconsin with whom we have much in common. All because they voted to put Republicans in their governors' mansions.

Update: As noted in comments, this should have been titled "could gain".

Dawn Chorus: Lovely weather for ducks

by lineatus

Today is supposed to be a banding day, but I'm hearing a lot of raindrops on the roof as a I type.  It's been that kind of a year.  Lots of rain, not so many hawks.  If only I were a waterfowl bander...

Cinnamon Teal... the other kind of red shoulder.

Happy Carl Sagan Day, everybody
By Tom Chivers

It would have been Carl Sagan’s 76th birthday on Tuesday, and his army of nerdish fans around the world have dedicated a day to his memory. It’s today, for some reason, so go and celebrate.

There’s a lot to love about Sagan: a great scientist and great author, a genuine thinker and an excellent populariser. His book and TV series "Cosmos" remain some of the greatest works of popular science of all time. And, of course, he is one of the most quotable men in history.

Hat/Tip to Inspired By Nature for this topic.

More on this and other science, space, and environment stories after the jump.
