Scientists to Fight GOP's Climate Science Inquisition -Shimkus: God will save us

by Lefty Coaster

Scientists are coming together to grapple with the newly empowered Republicans in congress, who are preparing to launch an inquisition into Climate Science on behalf of their Oil and Coal Company sponsors.

Climate scientists plan campaign against global warming skeptics

The American Geophysical Union plans to announce that 700 researchers have agreed to speak out on the issue. Other scientists plan a pushback against congressional conservatives who have vowed to kill regulations on greenhouse gas emissions.

Faced with rising political attacks, hundreds of climate scientists are joining a broad campaign to push back against congressional conservatives who have threatened prominent researchers with investigations and vowed to kill regulations to rein in man-made greenhouse gas emissions.

The still-evolving efforts reveal a shift among climate scientists, many of whom have traditionally stayed out of politics and avoided the news media. Many now say they are willing to go toe-to-toe with their critics, some of whom gained new power after the Republicans won control of the House in Tuesday's election.

Personal Power Production: Solar from Civil Defense to Swadeshi

by gmoke

US and NATO forces have distributed more than 700,000 solar/dynamo am/fm/sw radios in Afghanistan since before our invasion of 2001 and that a simple modification to that solar/dynamo adds battery charging capabilities to each of them (circuit diagram at http://www.dailykos.com/... ).

US AID is distributing 250,000 solar/dynamo radios in Sudan over the next few years.  Again, those solar/dynamos can not now charge extra AA or other size batteries although with a connection to a battery bay from the cell phone charger output they certainly could.  The combination of a few square inches of solar electric, photovoltaic, PV power with a hand-crank or pedal power generator provides a modicum of electric power day or night, by sunlight or muscle power.  It also allows battery switching, charging one set of batteries while using another.  This is practical personal power production and the technology is deployed in the field in Afghanistan and Sudan or available off the shelf right now for $30 from LL Bean and many others, if you are willing to do a little tinkering.

The same technology is also a Solar Civil Defense.

Infinite Planet Politics

by Eric Zencey

Strong, passionately held opinions have frequently divided Americans and the politicians that represent them.  The divisions have been cut by fundamental, yes-or-no questions:
should some humans be allowed to hold others as slaves?
Can states secede from the Union?
Should money be coined in silver, easing the deflation that benefits banks and lenders and hurts farmers and borrowers?
Is society responsible for establishing a minimum standard of living for its members, or should it be every man for himself?
Will capital and corporations be brought under social control, or should there be free markets and less regulation?
What’s it to be, less government or more?

These lines of cleavage don’t admit of much compromise, and they’ve propelled Americans into sharp, sometimes violent division more than once in the history of the Republic.

There is now a new line of cleavage emerging, although only one side of the division seems to have recognized and capitalized on the change.

If you're reading this...

by citisven

...you are probably on a computer. Or some sort of hand-held device. Smart phone. Pod. Pad. Berry. Tablet. Insert [catchy name of the next latest greatest cool and hip new gadget about to hit the market].

What the manufacturers of these shiny new objects fail to tell us is what goes into making them and what happens after we're done with them.

Annie Leonard, the producer of the acclaimed The Story of Stuff video, just released her latest work, The Story of Electronics.

I think it's well worth watching and pondering.

Why is the U.S. Helping Finance Fossil Fuels Overseas?

by Bruce Nilles

In a blog post this week, United States Export-Import Bank President Fred Hochberg paints a rosy picture of future trade relations between the United States and key emerging markets such as India and South Africa - one which envisions a revamped American economy fueled by export trade that feeds a growing middle class.

Yet despite this rhetoric, Ex-Im Bank is not only failing to finance a clean energy economy, but it is also saddling dynamic emerging markets with 19th century fuels by propping up an industry only able to survive in a 21st century economy through political maneuvering, enormous subsidies, and misleading PR campaigns.

Nourishing the Planet TV: Beating the Heat to Reduce Post Harvest Waste

by NourishingthePlanet

Crossposted from the Worldwatch Institute's Nourishing the Planet.

In this week’s episode, Nourishing the Planet research intern, Abby Massey, introduces a simple but effective way to beat the heat and reduce post harvest loss due to heat. In the Sudan and other parts of sub-Saharan Africa, the non-profit organization, Practical Action, is using clay, concrete, sand and water to create small "refrigerators" to preserve fruits and vegetables and improve diets and incomes.
