What matters.

by RLMiller

I'm sorry.  I've been lurking since the election, and now the recommended list is alien to me.

Tax cuts.

Unemployment insurance.

Wikileaks.

These matter today, and they'll matter tomorrow, but I tend to take a long view: what will matter in 2020? what will matter in 2100?

Could the stakes be higher?

by A Siegel

Simply put, I wish that I could say yes ... that the 2010 election does not have the potential for undermining our already horribly weak fiscal system, for deepening the incredible gap between haves and have-nots, for worsening our blind rush into the looming crash of Peak Oil, for cementing our spiraling descent into catastrophic chaos, for ...

Let me be clear, despite some tremendous appointments and some great actions, the Administration has fallen short on too many issues. In the face of the devastating situation when he entered office and the Republican "Just Say No" to everything style, the actual achievements are not to be discounted.

If, come next Wednesday, the Republicans take the House (and, even worse, the Senate) the progress since the 2008 election will screech to a halt in Washington -- on issue, after issue, after issue.

I'm a ____ing believer II. So doubt was bad Science?

by LaFeminista

A number of people myself included were called conspiracy theorists [by a very few here] in the MSM, because we claimed that the governments fairytale that the oil had just up and went was just so much bullpucky.

Well it looks like the the governments own agency is wearing my tin foil hat.

Bill Lehr, a senior scientist at the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) departed from an official report from two weeks ago which suggested the majority of the oil had been captured or broken down.

"I would say most of that is still in the environment," Lehr, the lead author of the report, told the house energy and commerce committee.

It really doesn't take that much intelligence to grasp that a million tons of oil mixed with a previously banned dispersant does not just up and evaporate. I'll be generous and call it wishful thinking, but I will say it is no wonder science is taking a hit when plain bad science is applauded because it fits with the need.

The blindness of conventional wisdom

by A Siegel

Sadly, the conventional wisdom seems to be that action on climate change is a political loser. According to the Washington Post, Rust Belt House Democrats who voted for the Waxman-Markey American Clean Energy & Security (ACES) bill that passed in 2009 feel abandoned by the White House's inability (or unwillingness) to force Senate action. And, many Democratic Representatives see this vote as a noose around their neck heading into the mid-terms like the Btu tax disaster was in 1994.

While there were (as this author would be glad to tell you in a different post) serious problems with ACES and it could have been (MUCH) better, this seems to be a case where the conventional wisdom is fostering a new reality rather reflecting reality.

We Are Screwed

by Jill Richardson

I am frustrated. And depressed. First of all, the oil spill is just overwhelming. Everything about it. The amount of marine life killed, the wetlands destroyed, and then all of the extra disaster on top of the original disaster. As if all of the oil spilling into the Gulf wasn't bad enough, then they had to go dump in a bunch of toxic dispersants. And when the EPA told them to stop using Corexit, BP basically gave the EPA a middle finger and kept on doing it. Then there's the endangered sea turtles burned, the clean-up workers denied the ability to wear protective gear, and the media kept away from the clean-up, the wimpy six-month moratorium that should have been longer in the first place, and then even THAT getting turned over by a judge who gets his bread buttered by the oil industry.

But that is just the start.

Oh and my actual title is We Are Fucked but the Swearing Police made me change it.

What is Behind the War - Our Real Issue and What I Can Do

by Ellinorianne

We can argue all we want about why we fight but ultimately the issue comes down to resources and what is at stake it is the survival of us as a species and our place in the world.

Our hubris as a species has not only put us in peril but has systematically wiped out species after species due to habitat loss from our encroachment on their space because we just need more.

Deforestation, desertification and urban sprawl is snatching up vital space and pushing out species at an alarming rate.

Its All Effing Natural Rant.

by LaFeminista

You have to really admire the total lack of any viable sign of intelligence from republicans. I mean you really have to be either fucking insane to come up with the bullshit they have, or totally brain dead. No matter what garbage humanity can throw at our planet its a natural phenomenon. "Global warming has been happening for decades, its natural and plants need CO2 and if we didn't produce CO2 all the plants would die!!!! Anyhows, it was a cold winter, its just not happening I tell ya. Scientists, ya boo sucks to them, we have 10,000 dentists and oral hygienists who say otherwise!" heh now we are served "Oil has been leaking in to the gulf since ever, hence the BP disaster is a natural one" What the fuck? Who the hell do they think they are fooling? Bats? At least BP admit something went ___ing wrong, well a bit anyway. Shit I bet if we had a nuclear meltdown it would be just a natural phenomi-thingy, uranium does that shit. Look at the sun!!!! Its a great ball of nukkular whatchamacallits! It keeps us warm!!! You god-dammed commie pinko socialist fascists! Its FEMA camps that ain't natural, and neither is stealing candy from grandma!!!
