"The administration acted appropriately in its immediate steps to inspect every rig in the Gulf following the Deepwater Horizon explosion. Those inspections were necessary to assure Americans that offshore operations were safe and subject to appropriate oversight.

"In addition, the oil and natural gas industry took immediate steps to review practices and equipment to ensure safety and environmental protection, through the formation of two industry-wide task forces. The task forces provided important insights to the Department of Interior during its earliest examination of Gulf operations.

President Barack Obama and Congressional leaders spent this week trying to stand up to the oil industry. In the wake of the Deepwater Horizon spill in the Gulf of Mexico, Obama pushed BP to siphon $20 billion into a escrow fund that will cover liability claims, and Congress grilled BP CEO Tony Hayward and other oil bigwigs as to how they were protecting the country’s coastal waters.

Hello, Kossacks!

A friend of mine, Susan Dodd, is currently writing a book on the tragic Ocean Ranger offshore drilling accident that killed all 84 of its crew off the coast of Newfoundland in 1982. After reading a letter she wrote in response to a NYT editorial, I encouraged her to address this forum, as I believe Kossacks would find her perspective of the BP's Gulf gusherf*ck interesting and valuable. She has joined DKos but has to wait a week before publishing a diary, and so she asked me to go ahead and post what she has written for her. Hopefully, Susan will be able to take some time out of her busy schedule to respond in the comments section and perhaps continue diarying on DKos in the future.
