The Oil Spill Tool Box Is Empty

By now everyone has realized the tool box for fixing BP's oil leak is more than deficient. It's abysmal. Those of us who have been against off shore oil drilling weren't able to get much more out than we are against off shore drilling.

No one understood why we are against off shore drilling other than, "What if something horrible happens?" For those of us who know why, BP's heinous environmental crimes are a nightmare come true.

The facts are harsh. BP has failed and other big oil companies don't have anything better to offer. The U.S. government has few, if any tools to deal with a blown underwater oil well. The U.S. government employs too few engineers and scientists with both the know how and experience to deal with a blown underwater oil well.

This is counter to every cultural belief of every American. It's inconceivable to us that we might have hit a problem bigger than our technology can solve in a week or two.

Did you hear about a letter our government sent to BP? If like me you are reading too much and feeling a bit zoned out due to outrage and catastrophe fatigue, you may have missed it too. It was confusing, but McClatchy helped clear up the questions: Actually there are two letters. The June 8th letter tells BP to get their act together in no uncertain terms. The second, pdf, June 11 letter gives BP an ultimatum.Washington Post: You have the weekend to figure out a better way to contain the oil. BP Wants Judge With Ties to Big Oil

While BP's engineers, and all the other industry experts arrayed to assist them, are praying that the "Top Kill" procedure to end all the oil leaking into the Gulf works (it's still too soon to know), BP's legal team is deeply involved solving a different crisis: how to limit BP's liability for the mess it created. So it should come as no surprise that BP wants only one judge to handle all litigation involving the Deep Horizon disaster, a judge with troubling ties to the oil industry:
