Fracking is SAFE! Just ask the "Energy Citizens"! S'okay if your tap water ignites.

Last night, Rachel Maddow had actor Mark Ruffalo on last night to talk about fracking in New York and Pennsylvania. By now, you've surely seen the scene from "Gasland" where the guy lights his tap water on fire. This is due to fracking wells that pump chemicals and water into the bedrock shale to fracture it and release the natural gas. As Maddow points out, the fracking is done several thousands of feet below where the aquifer is which, apparently, leads to ignitable tap water.

According to Ruffalo, the Delaware River Commission is getting ready to put upwards of 30,000 wells in there.

Meanwhile, the "Energy Citizens" group, an astroturf group promoting status quo for clean energy sent me a very interesting email recently.

New messaging: Deepwater Horizon changed everything

The title says it all.  This is our silver bullet, if we can figure out how to use it.

As an alternative to the current food-fight, I'd like to try to offer something constructive.  Here's an idea that I haven't yet seen or heard discussed.  Being overseas, I rely on podcasts for my media fix, so I'm usually half a day behind the flux.  I was listening to last night's Rachel Maddow show on the way home today, and I had an epiphany while listening to her brilliant, but ultimately fruitless, revision of Obama's oval office address.

The thing we need to unite the folks who feel as Rachel and I do, is unified, good, consistent messaging.  I'm not a genius at messaging, but I'm certain we could get a lot of mileage out of one simple, familiar message, repeated ad infinitum: "Deepwater Horizon changed everything."  Follow me after the break if you're willing to be convinced.

Rachel Maddow ridicules BP's latest lies, affixes blame to Dubya

Aghast at the temerity of the rich white men running BP, Rachel Maddow took it upon herself to call them on their latest (greatest?) audacity.

Last night, Maddow could barely contain her outrage about the obscenely dishonest and disingenuous spin vomited up by BP fat cat Doug Suttles, who was interviewed on a helicopter (!) by NBC News correspondent Tom Costello.

Eventually getting all schoolteacher by bringing us to the big video board to illustrate the extent of the wrongness, Maddow makes it very clear that the lying liars were indeed so full of shit that their eyes turned brown.

Mr. Suttles? Yesterday you were known as "Chief Operating Officer of BP Exploration and Production."

From now on you will be known as Ms. Maddow's b*** the rich white guy PWNED by Rachel Maddow.

No more trust for BP on dispersants.

It's time we talk about dispersants. We need to rip into this. Pull it apart. Look at it. Examine it. Turn it over. Upside down. Inside out. We know this oil clean-up is a total clusterfuck. We know that. We see it. Dead guys signing off on clean-up plans. Walruses in the Gulf and magic fairies. We know this. We know BP can't lay boom correctly. It had no plan. None. Nada. Nothing. We KNOW this. WE KNOW THIS ABOUT BP. We know it has lied, covered up, bullshitted, spun and screwed us. So why, in the name of everything on this planet ARE WE TRUSTING IT WITH THESE DISPERSANTS?

This, while their exploration and research budgets supported drilling to ever more dangerous depths. She has also been the only MSM journalist to expose the way current technologies have been implemented... wrong. Rachel Maddow said, "That is bad boom right there!" and "Why is that boom so bad?". She did this while the rest of our News Media used useless boom installations as backdrop, never seeming to notice that a single thing was amiss. Again, Rachel links to Fishgrease Booming School

In Rachel's show last night, she had a conversation with Michael Blum. In that conversation, you can hear shades of Fishgrease.  Without Fishgrease's diary: Booming School she would probably not have known what questions to ask Professor Blum.  In the interview along the coast, she asks about "booming done correctly" and receives much the same information that Fishgrease gave. She then links once again to Fishgrease's diary.

Rachel Maddow Did Some Great Reporting Re: Wetlands Last Night

. . . and if you missed it you should definitely check it out. I'd heard people saying how bad it will be for the oil to hit the wetlands, but no one really told WHY before. I mean outside of the obvious fact that it would be terribly difficult (damn near impossible) to clean. Last night Rachel explained what the wetlands were, what they do, and how the oil spill will harm the wetlands and ultimately the city of New Orleans and the rest of the country. I'm going to post the video below the jump.

Worst Case Scenario

Rachel Maddow brought up a serious issue on Wednesday evening's show (transcript): How is it that we are forced to use the same tools and techniques for fighting oil spills that have already proved fruitless in the deep-water Gulf? Same busted blowout preventer, same ineffective berm, same underwater plumes, same toxic dispersants, same failed containment domes, same junk shot, same top kill—it‘s all the same technology. ... The oil companies keep talking about how technologically advanced they are—but what they‘ve gotten technologically advanced at is drilling deeper.  They haven‘t gotten any more advanced on how to deal with the risks attached to that.  They haven‘t made technological advances in the last 30 year when‘s it comes to stopping a leak like this when it happens.  All they‘ve gotten better at is making the risks worse, by putting these leaks further out of our reach.
