In contrast to the surge of pro-pollution, anti-science ideology that is overtaking the Republican Party, most Americans are committed to building a clean energy economy that will preserve our way of live and defend our freedoms. Rare Chance to ? WH on Climate--in a Few Hours

It’s been a long year for people who care about global warming: the failures in Copenhagen and in Congress were great blows.

But it’s been a pretty good week: the announcement  on Tuesday that the Obamas would put up solar panels on the WH roof, the pictures the next day of Maldivian president Mohammed Nasheed doing that very thing, the announcement yesterday that Illinois governor Pat Quinn is going solar too. Oh, and the mayor of Mexico City announcing that they’ll cut carbon emissions in the world’s third largest city by 10%.

All of this leads in to 350.org’s huge Global Work Party on 10/10/10.—which, with 7000 events in 188 countries will be the largest day of environmental action in the planet’s history. Hell, it will be the most widespread day of political action on any issue ever.

350 eco-collapse jokes by 10/10/10 -- are you kidding?

When we heard about 350.org's 10/10/10 project a couple of months ago, we struggled to find one that was appropriate to our own project.

Last week we had an epiphany, and we've launched an 11th-hour experiment, to gather 350 jokes about environmental collapse by 10/10/10, and then make that database freely available for nonprofit use.

Why jokes? Because by laughing, we understand differently.

And because environmentalists are, according to most conservative pundits, a humorless lot, too serious by half, and we want to prove them wrong.

Below are the 40 jokes we've collected so far (only 310 to go!), in descending order of recency, not quality. There are some good ones!

If you'd like to participate, please do, either in the comments (I'll copy and paste 'em!) or directly, on the 350jokes page on our site.

Expensive, inconvenient, and scratchy: solutions are easy

In response to a comment in a recent post of mine, I replied,

"I think lots of us know what we have to do -- change radically -- but far too few are actually doing it. Problems abound, but so do solutions -- they're just expensive, inconvenient, and scratchy.

That's the theme of this diary -- that we can no longer be lazy, and that it can't be cheap, or convenient, or easy to save ourselves.

Asteroid collision Averted ... with a Large Assist from the Sun

Asteroids can Kill.  No doubt about it.

Just ask the Dinosaurs!

Anyone unfortunate enough to be stuck in the path of one --
doesn't really stand a chance.

Unless that "Someone" happens to have the Intellect,
to channel, and re-direct the immense power of Nature,
towards a Better Outcome.

That someone, should be Us.

Mirror satellites 'could divert asteroid'

The best way to divert an asteroid from a potentially catastrophic collision course with Earth is to deploy a "swarm" of mirror-bearing satellites to focus a beam of sunlight onto its surface, scientists say.

Is there a bigger lesson here?

Archimedes said:

"Give me a place to stand on, and I will move the Earth."

Of course Archimedes was well versed in the principles of Physics,
and the prime mover in the concept of ... Levers ...
