BP's Disaster - Turtle Hurdles Edition - ROV #37

by khowell

You are in the current BP disaster ROV, number 37. If you'd like to go back to see what we've said in days past, visit the current mothership. This is where you want to be for discussion, worrying, tearing up, and caring for each other.  It's also where you're welcome to be angry and scream and curse and cry and rant at the criminal negligence and greed that have brought us all together.  Most importantly, though, it's where we can learn from those kossaks among us (I'll not name names for abject fear of leaving one of you out, but you know who you are.) who bring the light of knowledge - sometimes with heat, sometimes without it - and teach us about what's happening beneath our Gulf of Mexico.

Preparations for Top kill and Live Video Analysis

by yuriwho

For those actually interested in the details and trying to make sense of the images/video from the live feed this diary can be a place to discuss them. First, here's BP's technical briefing from yesterday describing the various things they are considering trying. (I STRONGLY RECOMMEND WATCHING THIS!) Starting on Saturday, people viewing the live feed noticed that there were some strange events happening at the main leak pipe typically shown in the live feeds from the video. A blog post by some guy named monkeyfister claimed these were sub-sea blowouts. After further reading & analysis it appears these were the first tests of the planned top kill operation. Live Video Links: http://www.bp.com/... http://www.cnn.com/ (look for Live: underwater view of leak in the left column)

How the top kill would (hopefully) work (with animation)

by seesdifferent

This is a brief diary which is more of a pictorial explanation than anything else. To me, not an engineer but with a science background, the top kill idea didn't make any sense, with that riser kinked and leaking where it comes out of the BOP. The idea initially shown below is that under very high pressure a dense and viscous substance ("mud") would be injected into the "kill" and "choke" ports, and that this pressurized substance would force the oil back down the well, and then would be cemented over. However, it seemed to me that firstly, the mud could not be injected very rapidly through the small hoses, and, secondly, the mud would just come flying out the top and rip the already leaking riser pipe into shreds. Now I have run across an animation/explanation which makes the scheme seem more reasonable.
