Time to Keep Fighting, Mr. President

by Michael Brune

Has someone discovered a way to travel back in time to the Bush administration? On Tuesday, the EPA asked for a one-year delay on new rules for air pollution from industrial boilers. The very next day, the agency announced it wants to wait for another half year before setting new standards for ozone smog. Both actions defy every kind of logic but one -- pandering to polluters and their scare-mongering political allies.

Barack Obama ran and was elected on a promise to protect Americans by cleaning up the air that we breathe every single day. But to clean the air, you have to get your hands dirty. If the polluters who are complaining today had gotten their way for the past 40 years, there never would have been a Clean Air Act, and millions more Americans would have been sickened or died. Many of these polluters -- and their allies in Congress -- have fought progress to improve people's health at every opportunity. We need our president to fight back.

Another slap on the wrist for big polluter BP

by DWG

Industrial serial killer BP knows well the benefits of lax regulation and laughable penalties for breaking the law. Yesterday, they received another wag of the finger for repeatedly endangering the health of thousands of Americans.

The crimes:

... two fires that occurred at the refinery on March 30, 2004 and July 28, 2005, and a leak that occurred on August 10, 2005. During the three incidents, each of which resulted in the surrounding Texas City community to shelter-in-place, thousands of pounds of flammable and toxic air pollutants were released. The settlement also resolves allegations that BP failed to identify all regulated hazardous air pollutants used at the refinery in plans submitted to EPA.

The punishment:

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Justice Department announced today that BP Products North America Inc. has agreed to pay a $15 million penalty to resolve federal Clean Air Act violations at its Texas City, Texas petroleum refinery.

Republicans Hate Clean Air, Water and Think You're Stupid

by Steven D

Republicans say they want to restore America.  But restore it to what?  They don't want to cut carbon emissions or limit Big Oil and Big Coal's continued dirty and dangerous drilling and mining practices.  No, they want to expand them.

We will fight to increase access to domestic energy sources and oppose attempts to impose a national "cap-and-trade" energy tax.

Republicans don't even want the EPA to require companies to make their industrial boilers release less toxic emissions of dioxin, mercury, carbon monoxide and other known health risks into our air by updating to the latest technology.  The excuse they offer for allowing the continuous release of these poisons into our atmosphere reveals a massive display of arrogance and hypocrisy:

We don't need ... don't want your help ...

by A Siegel

When it comes to the necessity of facing down pollution in the nation's electricity system and other major polluting industries, it is hard to read recent Obama Administration action as anything other than a strong statement to leading environmental organizations:
Stay out of our way.

We don't need your help.

We don't want your help.

With monumental inaction by the U.S. Senate in the face of devastating climate chaos from flooded Pakistan to smoldering Russian to heat records in many nations and many areas of the United States, the paths forward to effective action to turn the tide away from egregious CO2 emissions seem limited (at best).  With the President (and his Administration) having, to put it politely, flubbed its leadership role on the climate front in terms of getting serious and meaningful action through the U.S. Congress, we have to wonder seriously at the latest action.

Burning Coal + Hot Days = Unhealthy Air Warnings

by Bruce Nilles

Yesterday and today are code orange unhealthy air alert days in the Washington, DC, region where I live. The 95+ degree temperatures and excessive ground-level ozone create extremely unhealthy air – especially for kids, senior citizens, and people with pre-existing breathing conditions.

These aren't the first days this summer where we've had these warnings, and I know that the Washington, DC, region is not alone in its unhealthy air warnings. Temperatures are soaring across the U.S. - and while one major source of air pollution is vehicles, the other major cause is burning coal for energy.

Stop the Senate from Gutting the Clean Air Act!

by Lowell Feld NRDC Action Fund

Just when you thought the U.S. Senate couldn't do any less for clean energy and the environment than it's (not) done so far, we now face the real possibility of what would amount to a "stop-work order" on the 40-year-old, wildly successful (e.g., studies finding benefits outweighing costs at a 40:1 ratio), Clean Air Act.

Call Your Senators Now to Stop Big Coal, Big Oil in Murkowski Vote

by Bruce Nilles

Today will see a major vote in the U.S. Senate - one that could hugely benefit Big Oil and Big Coal if it passes. Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) will introduce her disapproval resolution that would block the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from taking action to limit global warming pollution - even from the biggest polluters like coal plants and oil refineries.

Breaking: Americans Believe in Global Warming

by Steven D

I know, it's hard to believe in global warming what with all the evidence presented by climate change skeptics that global warming is a hoax, and the great Climategate scandal, the one the proved that Evil Scientists and Al Gore had been faking their data in order to make Al Gore rich. Yet most Americans still seem to believe that global warming is real and they want Big Guvmint to do something about it! (cont.)

Why the Vote on Murky Air Act Matters. Call Today. Please.

by RLMiller

Tomorrow, the Senate will vote on S.J. Resolution 26, colloquially known as the Murky Air Act.  Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-Baked Alaska) has introduced a resolution of disapproval of the EPA's ability to regulate greenhouse gases.  If it passes, the EPA will forever be barred from taking action against carbon pollution.  Forever.   Why should you pick up the phone today, when President Obama has already threatened to veto (1 pg pdf) the resolution if it passes?  Below the fold are answers and Senators most deserving of your phone calls.
