by J e d

How was your weekend, America?  Any hot dates?  You're still involved with Big Coal?!  Unbelievable.  (Sigh) You do love when that industry talks clean to you, don't you?  All those sweet little lies...

Swimming in the sea...

by communicable

According to Time magazine:

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Rand Paul said Monday that Washington lawmakers are showing no consideration for future generations with deficit spending that is passing an "enormous burden of debt" on to America's children and grandchildren.

The article continues:

"I acknowledge that the system is broken, and if we just keep borrowing, we could destroy the entire system," Paul said. "Then, there would be no Social Security, no Medicare and no government because we will be drowning in the sea of debt or destroy the currency in the process."

Saudis block key Climate Study - EKos

by wade norris

There is one disturbing diary up now about Saudi Arabia and here is one more. It turns out that Saudi Arabia has convinced Qatar and Kuwait to join together to block a U.N. Climate Change study, in an apparent effort to protect their Oil Based Economy. The immediate losers are the people who are members of A.O.S.I.S. - the Alliance of Small Island States - and what they have to lose by this action. crossposted at Huffington Post, Square State,  and PRAER.org

The Poisoned Pennsylvania Town, Abandoned in 1984

by Muskegon Critic

In 1962 an exposed vein of coal in an abandoned strip mine caught on fire on the eastern side of Pennsylvania and it burned under ground for... ...what is it today? 2010? For 48 years. For 48 years the vein burned, getting its oxygen from an abandoned coal mine. And it burns today, still venting noxious, toxic gasses out of the earth, bleaching trees, killing the vegetation and wildlife, creating sink holes when the underground coal is turned to ash. And here we come to the fate of the once quaint town of Centralia, Pennsylvania, which stands right atop the burning vein. Settled in 1841, the city's population hovered near 2000 for much of its existence. Now just 9 people live there. In the year 2002 the US Post Office revoked its zip code.
