Famously, one year ago Barney Frank asked a constituent, "On what planet do you spend most of your time?"
A redux of this query is in order.
"On what planet do you plan on spending your time once you are done destroying this one?"
Ignore this at your own peril.
Nothing - NOTHING - is more important than having a planet on which to live.
When we heard about 350.org's 10/10/10 project a couple of months ago, we struggled to find one that was appropriate to our own project.
Last week we had an epiphany, and we've launched an 11th-hour experiment, to gather 350 jokes about environmental collapse by 10/10/10, and then make that database freely available for nonprofit use.
Why jokes? Because by laughing, we understand differently.
And because environmentalists are, according to most conservative pundits, a humorless lot, too serious by half, and we want to prove them wrong.
Below are the 40 jokes we've collected so far (only 310 to go!), in descending order of recency, not quality. There are some good ones!

Think like a stand-up comedian!
However, in the last century this independence, rooted in material freedom and mobility, has come at an ever-increasing cost: The dependence on fossil fuels and all the problems associated with it. From fighting wars in oil rich countries, to epic oil spills, to climate change, our ostensible emancipation from the constraints of nature that enabled us to go it alone is coming back to bite us.
In tonight's EcoAdvocates, I'd like to wander past the "dependence vs. independence" paradigm and discuss a third and perhaps middle way of how we might live in balance with the earth's ecosystem without losing our creativity and autonomy: Interdependence
Sometimes, your kids tell you great things.
We have the coolest house on the street.
Wow. We're cool -- according to the kids. Certainly isn't the non-existent slide for the pool that isn't there. Our lack of a huge media room and the glaring absence of a gym didn't contribute. And, while I've always thought it cool that we live on the white house of the street, that isn't it either. Why is it cool? According to my soon-to-be fourth-grader son:

Climate legislation has been pronounced dead. Those who have worked hardest to pass it have given up.
And yet, this is the only time in the near future in which a bill can pass. We must not miss the moment.
I write to suggest that a jolt from outside could still revive the patient. The best efforts of senators, activists, environmental groups, and the climate community have all been put forward. I salute them and all their work. It was not enough. And there is one resource that was not used, that even at this late date could be put in play, and possibly revive the bill. I think we should use the base.
